Physical Education develops students' physical competence and confidence and their ability to perform in a range of activities. It promotes physical skills and development and knowledge about the body in action. Physical Education provides opportunities for students to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles. GCSE courses in Physical Education and Dance are available as options in Key Stage 4 for those students who are particularly talented on the practical side.
PE at TGGS
Torquay Girls' Grammar School has an exceptional P.E. Department. School teams enjoy considerable success at local, county and national levels across a range of sporting activities.
The P.E. teaching team has two full-time specialists, a Dance/SSCO full-time teacher and one part-time member of staff.
We have planning permission for a sports hall and are pursuing grants to get this much desired facility built.

Year 9 girls are given a limited option programme and are able to select from the activities above plus pilates, yoga

The department runs an extensive extra curricular programme and we encourage all students to attend at least one club each week. GCSE students have to offer themselves as coaches during this time and often take one-on-one coaching sessions with younger children or those who are findiing certain skills difficult to master. Fixtures are made with both local schools and those further afield and we take part in all relevant National Schools Competitions. Talented students are encouraged further with entry to Area then County trials and onward.
Key Stage 5
Although P.E. is not timetabled at KS5 extra-curricular clubs are made available to all Year12 and 13 students.
Pupils are encouraged to continue to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle and can join in with any of the Year 11 core P.E. sessions.
Club membership at Winners Gym, The English Riviera Centre and Torquay Squash Centre are all available to KS5 students, being close to and easily accessed from the school.
The school enters teams at KS5 for the National Schools competitions for both hockey and netball and the Aberdare Cup for girls' tennis. Athletics nominations for county are available and we strongly support any students entering the school at KS5 with a record for sporting excellence in any way that we can.

Our links with local sports clubs are strong and many students extend their interest to become members and play competitive sport at weekends and during the evenings. The department organises many weekend and holiday events including ski trips, activity days, Wimbledon Tennis Championship, Badminton Horse trials etc.
Year 7 cricket tournament
We are a member of the Torbay Sports partnership and our SSCO arranges many festivals. Our link primary schools are:
