House Culture

The Houses:

On joining the school each girl is assigned to a form within her year group which corresponds to one of the four Houses named after previous Headteachers:

Beal
Jackson
Robertson
Wilkinson

Allocation to forms, as far as possible, takes account of previous schools and friendships, sisters in the school. However there are many factors used to balance the form groups and the school will make the allocation and reserve the right to change groups in the future. The girls are taught in their form groups for lessons in Years 7-9 but in Year 10 when the girls begin most GCSEs the teaching groups will contain girls from all Houses. New year 7's must go through an induction ceremony where they swear loyalty to their House.

The girls (and staff) are fiercely loyal to their Houses. There is a year long programme of House activities that girls can be invloved in from 'Ready Steady Cook' through to debating, poetry and photography as well as the more traditional sporting and singing activities. Most activities have a cup  and these are awarded at the end of term summer assembly along with the coverted House Cup. (Won by Jackson this year)

There are several whole school events for example ;
Charity Week- here each House has a full day to raise money for their  House Charity and Imprezza the school we support in Kenya.The last day the houses work together to raise money for Children in Need.
The Sponsored Walk- here the whole school get the ferries down to Brixham and walk the 10 miles back along the coast. Its noisy, its colourful and its a fair walk!
House shout - This is the second to last event of the year. Each house has an afternoon to learn and practice a song of thier choice. On the last afternoon of the year they must perform their song to the rest of the school and in front of a panel of judges. This is enormous fun, staff and students dress up, chant, dance and sing to impress the judges. This year Jackson and Beal tied as winners of the House Shout cup. The very last event of the year is the whole school singing the School song after which they leave the Hall to start the summer holidays.

After election campaigns each House democratically elects its Head and Deputy Head of House and these are supported by a staff Head and Deputy Head of House. The Head girl and deputy head girl are also elected democratically. They are sworn in at Christmas with a tradtional handing over of the blazer ceremony.
